Why Arden

The perfect family-friendly bathroom

10-09-2020

Designing a bathroom that addresses your family’s needs while exuding luxury and functionality is essential when approaching the design process for the very first time.

While there’s no set blueprint when designing the perfect family bathroom, there are a few key design elements we encourage families to consider adding to their ‘ideal bathroom’ checklist — and, as always, we’re here to help you realise these elements to create an elegant, dynamic bathroom that ticks every box.

Accessibility, space and storage

It’s no secret that a family’s bathroom can quickly become one of the most frequented rooms in the house, so ensuring your bathroom has adequate space (to fit all your kids, if not the whole family!) is imperative.

We always encourage our clients to design a large vanity with multiple sinks and ceiling-high mirrors; the perfect way to make school mornings and late night tooth-brushing that little bit easier and accessible for every family member.

When it comes to storage, we recommend choosing fittings and a layout that are both adaptable and practical. A double towel rail (at minimum) will never go astray and will prove convenient as your family grows — you’ll never be short of hanging space! For added luxury and sophistication, add in a heated towel rail to keep your towels warm and cosy, perfect for cold, wintery nights.

When discussing your bathroom’s design, our team will work with you to create storage and space that works for your family; low storage for easy access to toys, and hidden storage for important essentials — everything is, as always, fully customisable.

Lighting.

Incorporating good natural lighting as well as strong artificial lighting is important in every bathroom.

Our design team are experts in finding the perfect placement for large windows or skylights in bathrooms, without compromising on privacy. Our design team will work with you to ensure your bathroom is always light and bright, with the perfect lighting and window placement for your home and your block.

Finishes.

Sometimes it’s the small things that make a world of difference to your bathroom. Here are a few of our top tips when it comes to choosing finishes and fittings for a family bathroom:

  • Choose colours that don’t date and radiate a clean finish. We love neutrals; think whites and light greys.
  • Add recessed finger pulls to vanities and drawers to provide your space with a timeless, elegant look that is easier to clean and maintain.
  • Fit your taps with mixers, rather than separate hot/cold taps to keep younger children safe and prevent scalding.
  • Quality, quality, quality. You’ll never (and we truly mean never) regret fitting your bathroom with high quality handles, mixers and finishes.
  • Test out your tiles before you finalise your choice. Ensuring they’re non-slip and safe for little feet to waddle around on is important and often overlooked.
  • Keep grout lines minimal and in a mid-tone colour to match your chosen tiles. You’ll find they will appear sleeker and cleaner (and they’ll be easier to regularly clean, too!).

Although there is no one-size-fits-all approach to designing a luxurious and practical family bathroom, we always encourage clients to dress up their bathroom in the same way they would any other room. Selecting lush towels and bath mats, adding in a beautiful scented candle or some colourful artwork are lovely refined ways of making your bathroom uniquely yours.

We’re excited to work on your dream bathroom and create a space that is warm, inviting, bright and spacious — providing your family with much practical use and enjoyment for years to come.
