Interior Trends Forecast 2020

08-12-2019

Are you in the design phase of your build and looking for some interior inspo? Or perhaps you’re just looking to refresh your home with the latest styling trends?

Our Interior Design Manager, Carissa, has developed a trend forecast for 2020 to help you get a head start on your home’s interior design:

  1. Natural Love

Timber is truly timeless and will always be an essential material when it comes to interior design. A resurgence of cane and rattans in furniture as well as natural stone and linen textiles can be expected in 2020.

You’ll also notice that handmade tiles (especially mosaics) in soft whites that have a subtle Japanese influence will be incredibly popular within bathrooms.

Indoor greenery will continue to be more of a staple than a trend, as more and more people desire a connection to nature.

2. Embrace your curves

Feminine shapes and curves will be squeezing their way back into both architecture and furnishing trends in the new year. Archways will be prominent and you’ll notice curves appearing in benchtops and joinery, as well as furniture and lighting.

3. Art Deco allusions

Following on from the curves, opulent art deco style influences are appearing in textiles and furniture shapes. Keep an eye out for panelled bedheads, curved mirrors and tile shapes that contrast well with angular forms and straight lines.

4. Superbly sustainable

With an ever-increasing focus on the supply chain, people are questioning where their purchase comes from, who made it, and if land and fauna was impacted during product harvesting. As a result, more and more people are turning to local makers and artisans to supply them with eco-friendly and ethical handmade products. Seeking sustainable alternatives to furnishings, artwork and décor will continue to be a focus for many in 2020.

5. Talk about texture

Boucle is back! A looped yarn with a knobby effect, boucle will be making a major resurgence in both fashion and interiors in 2020 (although Chanel’s iconic boucle jacket has never been out of style!). It’s all about combining sophistication with comfort and cosiness.

You can incorporate this material by featuring it as an accent scatter cushion, or why not go all out by sourcing an entire boucle sofa! (We did recently in our new Bargello display!)

6. Set the tone

Strong muted colours such as terracotta, ochre and tans will be highly popular throughout the new year. Incorporating mustard colours that reference the 1970s will work well as accents within subdued colour schemes.

Blues are back in a big way, with shades from classic deep navy to rich cobalt being embraced. And you’ll even see these blues being incorporated with natural greens such as forest green, sages and muted olive. According to the Dulux 2020 Colour Forecast, blues and greens will definitely be seen and are likely to be incorporated through artwork and furnishings.

2020 will see the use of warmer-toned greys, and beige will definitely make a come-back.
